The Power of Planning Ahead

What indicates that the provider has planned in advance for the outdoor play time?

She has filled up containers that are easy to tote with a variety of interesting materials.  She has limited space in her yard, so having the materials prepared helps maximize the amount of time the children have for play.  She has a container with different outdoor play materials that the children can begin to use immediately and also a container with specific materials for an activity she has planned for outdoors for when some of the children are interested in a more structured activity.

How does the provider address the different interests and needs of the children?

She has plenty of materials that are open-ended and suitable for a wide age range.  The older children can use the materials more independently and the provider and her assistant can help the younger children.  She asks one of the older children to place the container she has filled with materials for a structured activity on the table for later, giving that child the chance to be a helper.  By planning for a more structured activity, she is prepared to support the older children’s interests and needs.
