Managing Multi-Age Activities

Appropriate and engaging for multiple age groups

In what ways does the provider make this activity appropriate for different age groups?

As an open-ended activity, children are able to explore the material in any way they choose.  Children are able to stand or sit at tables that are different heights so they can comfortably work with the material.  They are also able to move freely between tables and observe the different ways in which other children are playing.

In what ways does the provider make this activity engaging for different age groups?

This activity appeals to children’s senses and they are able to manipulate the material in a variety of ways, stretching, pulling, cutting and even throwing it in the air.  Because they are able to freely explore and experiment the children can discover what they can do with the material and consider how it fits into what they already know.  The provider planned ahead to have space for the children to play with the material and enough for each child to work with at the same time.
