In the home and in an “I am Moving I am Learning” workshop, I have seen scarfs used to promote movement. Specific dances are performed using the scarfs and children also use them when doing their own dance moves. The same scarfs are also used in a variety of other ways, which involve motor skills, but are not the main reason (i.e. covering dolls…). I have seen a daycare floor covered with boxes of varying sizes. They were used by the children to create walls. fire trucks, houses…Using materials which promote divergent thinking and learning across domains happens even when we, the responsible parties, are not intending for it to happen, as children are more naturally open ended thinkers than are we. However, we should put more effort into the selection of materials for open-ended usage, as to not stifle our youngest learners.
