As a family child care provider, I have the responsibility to help children begin to realize that there are many different people in the world with differing appearances, living environments, religions, behaviors, clothing, and types of food, just to name a few. Young children are unable to grasp the depth of diversity in the world, but we can begin to teach respect and appreciation for cultural differences at a very young age. We can do this through example by the way we talk, activities we offer and engage in, the food we serve, and the toys we have available to the children for exploration. We can utilize the resource we have in the families in our care. We can encourage them to share their customs with us not only at the holidays and special occasions, but throughout the year. It is important to be in relationship with the families in your care so that you can include the child’s culture in your routine when appropriate.
