I am thinking about the cultural backgrounds of my students’ families very often. There have been instances of families that do not fit the common cultural background in my area. For example, there is a family from Kenya who recently moved here, and their first language is not English. They also have different views on breastfeeding cut off ages than I am used to. I try to be respectful of these differences in mindset when conversing with the parents.
Recently I had doubts and my own opinion about an almost four year old child at my center. The child was still not fully potty trained and also used a pacifier during the day, more than just a a comfort item. I personally disagree with a child of that age using one, but was unsure what (or if) I should bring the issue up.
